The Rich Ruler
Luke 18:18-30
Introduction: Jesus emphasizes man’s sin, inability, and selfishness in contrast with God’s goodness, power, and generosity. Summary Principle: God alone is holy, working salvation, and rewarding those who come to Him in faith. Thus, we should praise Him with humility and utmost confidence.
For the Children: Praise God for His goodness. Praise God for salvation. Praise God for the gifts He gives.
1) None, But God, Is Righteous (vv. 18-23)
All have sinned (Romans 3:23).
2) Salvation Comes From God (vv. 24-27)
None can save himself (vv. 26-27).
3) Those Who Come To God Shall Be Rewarded (vv. 28-30)
God rewards those who come to Him by faith (vv. 29-30; cf. Hebrews 11:6).
Our Response:
- Comfort:In Christ, we have justification, adoption, and sanctification along with the many benefits which accompany or flow from them.
- Charge: Confess your sin, draw near to Christ, and trust Him to provide your every need.
Christocentric conclusion: Although we are sinful and corrupt, Jesus Christ is perfect in righteousness and His righteousness is counted to us so that we might be saved and rewarded as we come to God through Him (cf. II Corinthians 5:21).
